For the autumn/winter 2012/13 color forecast we focused on the consumer’s ever-increasing need to reconnect with nature and what is around is around them. At the same time, new and unpredictable colors continue to stream through our computer monitors, leaving us with a desire for the unknown, the man-made and dramatic. This controversial consumer continues to send us mixed messages – they want to be as close to nature as possible while experiencing luxury and technology. The result is a sensual, vibrant and deep palette of colors that stem from us and our surroundings as well as the virtual world

Blue continues to be a driving color. An array of shades flow from greenish tint to minding navy and ultramarine. The color of the sky and the ocean offers comfort and familiarity. Season after season the blue offering varies from darker to lighter shades and back. For 2012/13 we are seeing strong green/yellow presence in the blue mix as well as dustier shades as if to remind us of the current reality and state of our existence.

Green, though still important, is loosing its appeal as we find alternative ways to connect to the environment. The green shades coming through for the 12/13 winter season are dramatic, almost man-made. Dustier overtone gives colors an aged feel that also feels very modern and unique. Combining colors in an unexpected manner is going to be even more important than the colors themselves. We are inspired by unconventional and unexpected color combinations.

The world being at our fingertips all the time means that more and more we will feel like active participants in the global culture, history and movements. Boundaries-free world is being offered to us through advanced technology and we reach out to previously unknown cultures, their habits and heritage, and their interpretation of color. We are inspired by the unpretentious use of color as seen in tribal Africa and in India – pink and purple plants blend into sensual colors. Acid greens and petrol blues add a sense of depth and familiarity.

The need to sometimes avoid reality and all it comes with is steering people in a dramatic, almost staged space. Photo filters and apps altering our reality are growing in popularity and are offering us a world close to what we know yet a bit stranger that makes us feel out of place. At the same time, nostalgia for the cinematic is transforming these colors into soft, dreamy shades that take us to places never known before.

Yellow offers a bit of sunshine and playfulness for the winter season. In trans-seasonal times, when the weather and no longer the calendar dictate our wardrobe choices, summer shades play an important role in the winter palette and vice versa. The darker yellow shades are warmer and welcoming. Sulfur-inspired light shades, however, seem almost artificial and off-putting.

Sun-kissed colors are reminiscent of bleached neons and grown-up pastels characteristic of the 1990s. We are inspired by the washed-away feeling these shades offer, as if the memories from the 90s are still preserved in the threads.
